Bong Soo Han has been a longtime favorite of martial arts fans and a respected instructor and friend to many at FIGHTING STARS Magazine. And for good reason. He has a gentlemanly way about him that has earned the respect of both students and teachers alike. When the opening of his new Hapkido studio was announced last spring in Santa Monica, California, FIGHTING STARS was there to cover it.
After introducing the host of celebrities-among them actor John Saxon and Ed Parker, Han then turned the remainder of the program over to his students. In an impressive display of Hapkido self-defense techniques, men and women students performed a series of dramatic counterattacks and kicks. Members of the audience got a first-hand look at the powerful flips and throws that make up this unique Korean form of self-defense. After completing the demonstration, the students were met with a much deserved round of applause.
The studio will, no doubt, become the center for those students interested in Hapkido in the near future. And with Bong Soo Han as principal instructor, it is sure to be a success.
As a recognized master in the art of Hapkido, Bong Soo Han continues to teach Hapkido the same way he learned it. Individual techniques and movements are passed from teacher to student just as they were centuries ago in ancient Korean monasteries. And as the adjoining photographs illustrate, Han's students have certainly learned their lessons well.
FIGHTING STARS readers are, of course, also familiar with Bong Soo Han's growing career as an actor. He has appeared in such films as The Trial of Billy Jack, Cleopatra Jones, and most recently, Kill The Golden Goose. Han will also be starring in The Snow Tiger, expected to begin production in the near future.
Brad Blackenship, who represents Ocean Park Film Distributors (the company that distributed Kill The Golden Goose), was also in attendance. Having long been impressed with Master Han's dynamic skills, he told FIGHTING STARS that Ocean Park was currently seeking possible movie scenarios that would present Han's talents in an intriguing and favorable plot.
If Han's studio opening is any indication of what lies ahead for this respected martial artist/actor, then Han, and the public have a lot to look forward to!
